...Increasing Snow Across Western Wyoming Tonight; Expect Slick
Roads and Limited Visibility Monday Morning...

Snow will increase across the Jackson and Star Valleys and
surrounding mountains ahead of an approaching cold front. Snowfall
will be most widespread, with locally moderate to heavy snowfall,
from the predawn hours Monday morning through early Monday
afternoon. Snow will decrease behind the cold frontal passage mid
to late Monday afternoon. Total snowfall will range from 1 to 4
inches across the Jackson and Star Valleys, with locally higher
amounts from Thayne to Alpine. The mountains will receive 3 to 6
inches of new snowfall with higher amounts of 6 to 9 inches in
some areas above 9000 feet.

Morning commuters should allow extra time to reach their
destination Monday morning, especially if travelling over
mountain passes.

200 Inches of Snow and Still Counting for Winter 2016-2017

The winter of 2016-17 even with still a couple snow  months remaining, has already been a memorable one.
Following is the normal totals of snowfall and precipitation  over a 30 year period from the climatological station located just southeast of Bedford.

Daily snowfall and precipitation is also taken in Star Valley Ranch, which is in a comparable location to the Bedford 3 SE station.

As of Feb 24th the Star Valley Ranch site has topped 200 inches so far this winter. This compares to about 160 inches for an entire winter snow season per the Bedford station.  Additionally  the total precipitation in Star Valley Ranch has been almost 25 inches(24.97) since September 1st, more than would occur normally in an entire year.

...Final Snowfall Reports for the February 20th-22nd Snow Storm...

The latest cold front completed a run across Wyoming today and left
a swath of snow across the state. Most of the snow fell across the
west and higher terrain...with mixed snow and rain at the lower
elevations. These final totals are through noon February 22nd.

Note: SnoTELS (Snow Telemetry) are remote sensing sites in high
mountain watersheds. Snowfall data from SNOTELS are estimated
based on snow water equivalent.

Major Winter Storm Expected Across Southern and Eastern Wyoming Beginning Wednesday night

A Major Winter Storm will Impact much of Southern and Eastern Wyoming beginning Wednesday night until Friday.  Northwest Wyoming including Star Valley will escape much of the storm as it tracks out into the Plains. Following are some excellent products about the storm from the National Weather Service in Riverton WY.

SYNOPSIS:  A major winter storm is taking shape for central and southern Wyoming from late tonight through Friday morning.  Some snow is expected today mainly along and south of Interstate 80.   After sunset, snowfall will begin to increase in coverage and intensity across southern Wyoming. This snowfall is expected to overspread central Wyoming by around midnight Wednesday night. Periods of snow are then expected to continue through Thursday night, before gradually subsiding by around midday Friday.  The heaviest snowfall with this winter storm is expected  between the predawn hours Thursday to early Thursday afternoon. Snowfall rates of 1 to possibly 2 inches an hour could occur.  Very windy north to northeast wind is expected to develop early Thursday morning which will cause significant blowing and drifting snow.  Whiteout conditions are expected at times in rural areas.    

IMPACTS:
  • Significant airline delays (likely) or cancellations possible at Casper, Riverton, and Rock Springs airports Thursday.
  • Travel will become difficult or impossible especially in rural areas where whiteout conditions will be possible.
  • Road closures are likely (some could be for an extended period of time).  Please check wyoroad.info for the latest road conditions.
  • Young livestock will be vulnerable to the cold and snowy conditions.

Update on Approaching Pacific Storm to Western Wyoming-Heavy Snow in the Mountains

The latest significant Pacific storm is moving inland across California and headed for Wyoming. The morning water vapor satellite imagery clearly depicts the stream of very moist air mass originating near Hawaii which will provide copious amounts of rain and mountain snows inland across California northeastward into Western Wyoming.

Model forecast precipitation through Wednesday focus on the large totals in Califonia and also in the mountains of Western Wyoming.

Snow levels will rise with the warmer air mass, with precipitation becoming mixed snow/rain in Star Valley and likely mostly rain tonight and into Tuesday prior to the arrival of colder air.

Periods of snow are expected to develop across Star Valley this
morning. Snow is expected to mix with or change to rain this
afternoon into the evening. The precipitation is expected to
change back to all snow Tuesday afternoon and evening as a cold
front sweeps across western Wyoming. Rainfall amounts between a
half and one inch are expected with this storm, with a few inches
of wet snow possible. The rainfall along with some melting snow
could result in localized flooding or ponding of water.

mountains from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening. Also,
strong west to southwest winds will cause significant blowing and

Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow, which is in effect from
noon today to 5 AM MST Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no
longer in effect.

* Timing...Snow and strong winds are expected to move into the
  western mountains of Wyoming Monday afternoon. Snow and wind are
  expected to continue through Tuesday night.

* Snowfall Accumulation...12 to 24 inches are expected, with
  localized amounts up to 30 inches in the Teton mountains.

* Wind and Visibility...West to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph
  with gusts to 60 mph...especially in open areas or mountain
  summits. Visibility frequently below a quarter mile in heavy
  snow and blowing snow.

* Main Impact...Travel will become very difficult with the wind
  and snow producing slick, snow-packed roads along with high
  drifts over mountain passes. Please monitor JHAVALANCHE.ORG if
  your plans include travel into the backcountry. Also, the
  severely reduced visibility will be very disorientating for
  those recreating in the backcountry.

Another Major Storm Event on the Way from California to Wyoming the Next Two Days


Another very moist Pacific Storm system will be spreading copious amounts of precipitation inland across California  toward Wyoming the next 2 days.  The air mass is relatively warm thus snow levels are expected for the most part to remain above the valley floor in Star Valley.

However it will be another major snow event in the mountains and higher elevations of
 Western Wyoming.

Note the excessively large amounts of precipitation in the Central Sierras of California.

Below the visible satellite imagery Sunday afternoon clearly depicts the band of moisture  originating from near Hawaii(atmospheric river) as it is aimed at Central California where they do not need it!.
