Temperature Inversions Hold Cold Air in the Valleys

Riverton Forecast Office has compiled an interesting statement on the dramatic difference in temperatures due to the valley inversions over Western Wyoming on Friday.

 

Mother Nature Keeps Lower Elevations Frigid While Warming Mountains

Head for the Ski Slopes for warmer temperatures!

Snow covered basins and valleys of central and western Wyoming remained in the deep freeze while the mountains and some adjacent foothills were relatively warm due to an extremely steep temperature inversion at the surface. 



Following is a listing of maximum temperatures across western  Wyoming Friday, January 4th showing the extreme differences between the very cold basins and valleys and the warmer higher elevations  Note that the high temperature on Mount Coffin at almost 11,000 feet of 27 was 27 degrees higher than at Cokeville almost 5000 feet lower:
