URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE POCATELLO ID
412 AM MST MON JAN 9 2017

...FREEZING RAIN, HEAVY HIGH ELEVATION SNOW ARRIVES TODAY...

.A MOISTURE-LADEN AND WARM AIRMASS CONTINUES TO COVER SOUTHEAST
IDAHO. THE AREA OF FREEZING RAIN THREAT HAS MOVED NORTHWARD,
STRETCHING FROM THE DRIGGS AREA TO THE SALMON AND CHALLIS AREAS
FOR ELEVATIONS BELOW 6000 FEET. GROUND TEMPERATURES WILL HOVER
AROUND THE FREEZING MARK AGAIN DURING THE AFTERNOON AS
TEMPERATURES REACH HIGHS DURING THE MORNING HOURS, THEN START A
COOL DOWN. THE COLDER TEMPERATURES THIS AFTERNOON ADD ANOTHER
RISK OF ROADS BECOMING ICY. TOTAL SNOW AMOUNTS FOR MONDAY AND
MONDAY NIGHT WILL RANGE FROM 1 TO 3 INCHES IN THE SNAKE RIVER
PLAIN. FOR THE MOUNTAINS...SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 4 TO 12 INCHES
WILL MAKE TRAVEL THROUGH MOUNTAIN PASSES DIFFICULT DURING THE SAME
TIME PERIOD. THE HIGHER PEAKS OF THE SAWTOOTH RECREATION AREA AND
THE NORTHERN WASATCH COULD SEE 1 TO 2 FEET OF SNOW. ADDITIONAL
SNOW IS EXPECTED TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT, MORE THAN WHAT IS
EXPECTED FOR TODAY AND TONIGHT. SNOW MAY START TO FINALLY TAPER
OFF DURING THE AFTERNOON WEDNESDAY.

UPPER SNAKE HIGHLANDS-CARIBOU HIGHLANDS-
WASATCH MOUNTAINS/IDAHO PORTION-
INCLUDING THE CITIES OF ST. ANTHONY, ASHTON, ISLAND PARK, DRIGGS,
VICTOR, HENRY, SODA SPRINGS, DOWNEY, LAVA HOT SPRINGS,
AND MONTPELIER
412 AM MST MON JAN 9 2017

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM MST
THURSDAY...

* IMPACTS...HEAVY SNOWFALL RATES WILL MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR ROAD
CREWS TO KEEP EVEN MAJOR HIGHWAYS CLEAR OF SNOW. A THREAT OF
FREEZING RAIN MEANS THAT ROADS COULD BE ICY AND DANGEROUS.
EXPECT DIFFICULT TRAVELING CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE ROAD CLOSURES
FOR HIGHWAYS THAT HAVE HIGH ELEVATION PASSES GOING INTO WYOMING
AND MONTANA. BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW COULD QUICKLY COVER
  RECENTLY PLOWED ROADWAYS.

* TIMING...HEAVY SNOW WILL DEVELOP THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE
THROUGH WEDNESDAY. IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS, THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL
RATES WILL OCCUR DURING THIS AFTERNOON.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...2 TO 8 INCHES IN ELEVATIONS BELOW 6500
FEET. 6 TO 18 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE HIGH COUNTRY ABOVE THAT
ELEVATION. HEAVIER AMOUNTS OCCUR NEAR THE WYOMING BORDER.

* CONFIDENCE...HIGH CONFIDENCE IN SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ABOVE 6500 FEET
MSL. LOW CONFIDENCE BELOW 6500 FEET MSL DUE TO RISING SNOW
  LEVELS THROUGH THE PERIOD.

* LOCATIONS...ISLAND PARK...DRIGGS...SWAN VALLEY...SODA
  SPRINGS...MONTPELIER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR
HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR
OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL
MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST
TRAVEL, KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT, FOOD AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
