  1. Hey Jack...

I was wondering how well snow shows up on radar for the Star Valley.

Where I currently live along the east slopes of the Cascades of WA, we are shadowed by the relatively high radar beams (and the higher mountains on either side of me).. so if tops of precip based clouds are below 15k ft or so, it doesn't show up on radar. Is is safe to assume this happens in the star valley as well? Do you know roughly what the radar angle is for that area, and what corresponding altitude the reflectivity must be at to show up ?

    Thanks

  2. Excellent observation. The lowest reflectivity slice from the Pocatello radar at 0.5 degrees, is 7800 feet above the valley floor. In the wintertime, particularly post-frontal it can be snowing here at Star Valley Ranch all day and barely show up on radar. Thus 15000 ft MSL is the lowest elevation.

    1. Snowave merced, a correction as the elevation is above the PIH radar location which is at 4480 ft. This would put the height of the lowest beam at 12280 feet over Star Valley
