Smoke Sources

Smoke from distant fires will be present in the skies of Star Valley and much of Western Wyoming for the next several days.  While fire danger remains generally low in the mountains surrounding Star Valley, such is not the case in other areas.  Following is a graphic produced on Wednesday July 17 by the Missoula NWS office.

Reblogging of the Weather Cam Link

The initial post on this blog was a description of the Weather Camera link on the site.  This was posted on 10/11/11.  John has since improved the site archiving capability and thus a re-posting  of the original description with the added info about the improvements follows.  The additional discussion is underlined at the end.

The Weather Camera is a link to the site www.halescamvideo.com that was developed by John Hales as a Christmas Gift to me(his father) in 2008.  While John provides any technical needs, I am the site manager and maintain quality control of the Cams on the site.

At any given time there could be as many as 130 web cams displayed.  The criteria used to determine the display of a camera are:

1. Quality of the image.(StarDot Cameras much preferred).

2. Frequency of updates. (ideally every minute)

3. Proximity to Star Valley WY

4. View of the sky.

5. Reliability

Current Features

Left click on the image will provide a  larger current image

The cursor at the top of each cam will open up the control menu for that particular cam.

Left click on the minutes option(30 60 120 180 300) will build a loop of that length in time.

Left click on the info (i) button and it will bring up a google map centered on the webcam location.  Additionally it will display the latest weather observation and identifying the location of the observation.

There is also a radar option which when turned on will display the current composite reflectivity product from the NWS  The satellite option will display the current infrared imagery.

Clicking on the + will open up a looping option.  At least 3 days are available in the archive for all cams.  Selecting the date/time and looping length in minutes will rebuild a loop.

There are two options when building a loop.  The Load Loop option will rebuild a requested  time period  and display it.  A much more powerful option is the Create Video.  This will build the requested time period and then display the Download mp4 Video which will then produce a url  that can be copied/sent or saved as a video file.

While all cams have at least the most recent 3 days archived, additional days can be added to a particular cam upon request.

Star Valleys Natural Air Conditioning

One of the many benefits living in Star Valley WY is much of the summer there is little need to supplement the natural air conditioning available.  As in the past few days when afternoon temperatures are rising to some of the warmest of the summer, the very strong nighttime  radiational cooling provides ample time to cool down the interior of most homes.  The key is to open the windows around sunset and then shut them during the rapid warm-up time during the morning.

The following are graphs from around Star Valley of the temperatures the past two days  under clear skies and low humidities which allow the 45-50 degree ranges from maximums to minimums each day.

What's Expected for Independence Day?

What's Expected for Independence Day?

As we continue through the week, we realize that many of our customers are wanting to know what's in store for Independence Day! We thought we would put together this little page as a way to monitor anticipated weather conditions across central and western Wyoming. Specific details for your location can be found utilizing our Point and Click Map on our webpage.
Overall, we are looking at a ridge of high pressure being located over the state. This system will permit continued warming temperatures for Friday. Limited amounts of moisture are anticipated to be a part of the ridge, which may be enough to generate a few showers and thunderstorms over the area, especially due to afternoon heating. Most showers and thunderstorms are anticipated to remain over the mountains, though isolated activity will be possible over the lower elevation locations as well.

How is the forecast shaping up? Below are some graphics to give a general idea of what conditions might be like across western and central Wyoming.

Summer Week for Star Valley and the West

A summer weather pattern becomes established across all of the United States this week as high pressure aloft takes control.  Following is the 500mb forecast for Friday evening the 4th of July.

As a result, very warm air spreads across the western states including Wyoming.  Following are maps of forecast high temperatures  ahead this week.

The lower elevations will warm to near triple digits during the afternoons  such as Salt Lake City and Boise while here in Star Valley it will be mostly in the 80s with possibly low 90s in the lower valley locations such as Alpine, Etna and Thayne.

The desert southwest will be hot with  105-110 plus as can be seen on the map for maximums Wednesday afternoon.

The following is a graphic of  forecast conditions for July 3-4 in the Star Valley Area.

Cool mornings will be followed by warm and mostly dry afternoons on both days.  There is a small chance of late afternoon and evening thunderstorm, but little in the way of rain is expected.
